The new extended trailer for the second in the Fifty Shades trilogy based on the erotic romance novels by British author E. L. James is significantly darker than the first trailer, as it introduces the scorned ex girlfriends of the wealthy entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). You may recognise Bella Heathcote (pictured below) as the psychotic bitch from Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon or Johnny Depp’s true love in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. Here she plays Leila, one of Christian’s ex girlfriends who appears to stalk Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) before showing up in her apartment armed with a gun demanding answers as to why he chose Anastasia. None other than Kim Basinger plays Elena, the older woman who got Christian into his bad habit when he was a teenager. The film also features Luke GrimesMarcia Gay HardenJennifer EhleMax MartiniRita Ora (ugh) and newcomers to the story Tyler Hoechlin and Hugh Dancy.

While keeping the look and tone from the first film, the general mood of the second seems a lot darker, evoking imagery of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. The other new thing about the trailer is that it has replaced Miguel’s sensual cover of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy in Love’ with a new official theme tune – ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ by Zayn and Taylor Swift. James Foley, who directed Mark Wahlberg in The Corrupter (1999) has taken over directing duties for Sam Taylor-Johnson who has left the franchise after directing the first in the series which grossed over half a billion dollars world wide. Taylor-Johnson has said she felt “creatively handcuffed” due to the extreme control author E. L. James held over the production of the film. Foley also directed the third instalment which has already finished shooting.

Rated R for strong erotic sexual content, some graphic nudity, and language, Fifty Shades Darker is set to be released theatrically in the US and the UK on January 10th, just in time for Valentines day. You can watch the extended trailer below.
