The fear of God spreads exponentially in a small country town home to young mother Liz (Dakota Fanning) upon the arrival of a vengeful Preacher (Guy Pearce) who is mad with desire to punish those who commit wrong doings according to the bible. The Reverend accuses Liz of a crime she didn’t commit, and will stop at nothing to ensure she is given her punishment. Liz, who has had her tongue cut out, must muster up her strength to defend her family. Also in the cast is Kit Harington as Samuel, a cowboy whose love affair with a young girl, Joanna (Emilia Jones) also catches the devious attention of the Reverend, who secures a torturous contraption around her mother’s face, who is played by Carice van Houten. Brimstone is described as a triumphant epic of survival and a tale of powerful womanhood and resistance against the unforgiving cruelty of a hell on earth. And the trailer puts it on the top of the list of films to look forward to.

This will definitely put Nederlander Martin Koolhoven – who conceived, wrote and directed this potential masterpiece – on the map and in the same categories of great directors like Paul Thomas Anderson. The slow paced, brooding epic drama has a definitive likeness in tone to There Will Be Blood and Robert Eggers’ The Witch. Guy Pearce, who can portray the hero or the villain with equal brilliance, is seen with a scarred face and pure evil protruding from his pitch black eyes making him look like the devil himself. The trailer shows him dragging Kit Harrington’s young lover across the dirt by her feet and there is a brief glimpse of the Reverend shirtless in a bedroom using a belt to whip someone with the utmost conviction. By comparison, his character in Lawless look like a cuddly puppy. Fanning is a very rare child actor who grew up to prove herself worthy of the early spotlight, whose unmatched talent continues to shine as she gets older. Because she has grown up in front of the camera, as she develops through age groups she keeps giving performances that could be described as career-best, and I’m calling this as the best performance of her twenties. It will also be intriguing to see how Kit Harrington fares in his first venture to the American Wild West.

This dark, tense, 2 and a half hour thriller is a serious contender for the best movies of 2017 top spot. Rated R for brutal bloody violence, strong sexual content including disturbing behavior, graphic nudity, and language, Brimstone will receive a theatrical release in the US in March.
